Myofunctional Therapy & Buteyko Breathing - What are they and how they can benefit YOUR family!

Updated: Feb 21

There are two new treatments called Myofunctional Therapy and Buteyko Breathing that my family is doing that I want to make you more aware of. This is a follow up to our interview with Dr. Teresa Scott, DDS of Holistic Dental Associates, where we talked about what blood sugar, obstructive sleep, and mouth breathing have in common. Dr. Teresa Scott talked about how over time our genetics are changing. You are what you eat and over time you are what your parents ate and what their grandparents ate. We are now seeing generations of people who are having teeth problems and collapsed oral structures. This has a profound effect on our sleep, breathing, attention, focus and blood sugar levels during the day. Dentists are seeing more and more of these issues than ever before. Generational nutrition deficiencies are impacting us and our children. But let me share with you two things we can do to correct this.

Right now, you can use Myofunctional Therapy and Buteyko Breathing. Myofunctional Therapy is a program of specific exercises that target the facial muscles that are used to swallow. These exercises are used to strengthen the tongue. A weak tongue disrupts the flow of air and causes snoring, creates sleep apnea and causes enlarged tonsils. Myofunctional Therapy is currently being used by many specialists as an alternative therapy for sleep apnea. It’s non-evasive, inexpensive and has no major risk.

Buteyko Breathing is a gradual breathing retraining program. It allows people to experience reduced symptoms mentioned above and significantly reduce or eliminate medication. Children who mouth breathe (breathe through their mouth instead of their nose) are more prone to enlarged tonsils and adenoids, respiratory infections, allergies, asthma, chronic cough and nighttime bedwetting. If not treated it can lead to crooked teeth, receding chin, protruding noses, narrower airways and can develop a much higher risk for obstructive sleep apnea.

I want to provide you with two resources that you can begin using right now. First, you can visit OralFacialTX, Speech Language Pathologists in the Houston area that practice Myofunctional Therapy. On their website you can get more detailed answers about Myofunctional Therapy. You can also find out more about Buteyko Breathing in the book Buteyko Meets Dr. Mew. It is written in three sections for teens, parents and children.

Now that you are in the know what are you going to do with this information? I would encourage you to make an appointment with a holistic dentist in your area. Look for our blog post coming next week on my interview with Dr. Felix Liao. He is a holistic mouth doctor focusing on the dental contributions to medical symptoms and natural wellness. He is also the author of two of the books we mentioned in last week’s blog post.
