Did you know that it is possible to have a headful of facts and not have the truth? Have you ever known anyone like that? Would you like to be free from shame, sadness, or despair? Would you like to experience TRUE joy?
Today I want to talk about the Big 6 Emotions and how they can help you. In my former life, I was a speech pathologist, so I spent a lot of time learning about how emotions affect the brain.
The right hemisphere of our brains were wired to experience each of these big SIX emotions:
Sadness - "I lost some of my life."
Anger - "I need to protect myself and make something stop."
Fear - "I want to get away."
Disgust - "This is not life-giving."
Shame - "I'm not bringing you joy. You are not glad to be with me."
Hopeless Despair "I lack the resources I need for this."
Anyone have the Inside Out movie on your mind right now?!
God can use these Big 6 for His purposes!
Sadness - WHY? So, we can develop compassion - "Jesus wept."
Anger - Dangerous, but it has the power to move you into ACTION or to intervene.
Fear - Can save your life or another's.
Disgust - Move us to disciple those who are immature (teach my boys to not be so gross!).
Shame - Healthy shame messages to other followers of Jesus - that is not how we act (bathed in love and compassion).
Hopeless Despair - Brings us to dependence on God & "joy comes in the morning".
We are called to regulate these emotions by the power of the Holy Spirit. That’s God Spirit that lives within every person who has given their lives to Jesus. Let's not deny the existence of the emotion - call it out! And if you haven’t given your life to God but want to reach out! I want to help you!
I invite you this week that as you experience one of the big six, stop and call it out by name. "I'm feeling _______ right now". A mature person can return to normal flow within 90 seconds. This means they have regulated the “sadness” and they’ve seen the emotion as an opportunity to grow.
