Speech Language Pathologists in Your Child’s School

May is Better Hearing & Speech Month and in honor of that I want to bring more awareness to this topic. Today I am going to share eight ways that a Speech Language Pathologist can help your child and how your oils can support your child’s speech.

Let’s start with the eight ways that a Speech Language Pathologist can help your child.

1. Speech Sounds - This may be the most familiar way you may think of when you think of a speech-language pathologist. Your child may have trouble saying sounds. He may not speak clearly or be hard to understand.

2. Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing - Your child may have trouble understanding what he hears. He may not follow directions or answer questions well. It may be hard for him to tell others about his thoughts. He may not say the correct words or only say short sentences. Listening and speaking problems can also make reading and writing harder.

3. Social Communication - Your child may have trouble talking with other children. He may not make friends easily. He may not understand what others think or how they feel.

4. Cognitive Communication - These are the thinking skills your child needs to remember, solve problems, and use his imagination. Learning disabilities and brain damage can cause these types of problems.

5. Assistive Technology - Children who have difficulty speaking may benefit from using an augmentative and alternative communication system or display or "say" the words they want to use on a communication board or screen.

6. Feeding and Swallowing - Feeding and swallowing problems can make it hard for your child to eat and drink enough during the day. This can make it hard to learn. It can also make social times, like lunch or snack, harder for your child.

7. Stuttering - Your child may have trouble speaking smoothly. He may repeat sounds or words or have long pauses when he talks. Stuttering can make it hard to answer questions or give speeches in class. It can also make it hard to talk to friends.

8. Voice - Your child may sound hoarse or lose his voice. He may sound like he talks through his nose, called nasality. His voice may be too loud or too soft. Voice problems can make it hard to talk in class or with friends.

Now let’s talk about seven doTERRA essential oils that can help support your child’s speech.

1. Lavender – It’s the Oil of Communication and helps with verbal expression. It can release tension and help your child express themselves. You can diffuse it or use it in a roller bottle and apply it to the throat area.

2. Spearmint – This is the Oil of Confident Speech. It goes along well with Lavender. You can put a drop of this in your water before speaking. It promotes confidence and help with speaking in front of others.

3. Hawaiian Sandalwood – This oil can help provide connections with others.

4. Wild Orange – This oil helps with anxious feeling when having to speak and communicate effectively.

5. Frankincense – This oil helps with brain health and cognitive communication, listening, speaking, feeding, and swallowing. You can diffuse it or apply it topically to the brain stem in your neck.

6. DDR Prime Blend – This blend has a combination of Frankincense, Wild Orange, Lemongrass, Thyme, Summer Savory, Clove, Naiouli, Litsea. It’s great for cellular repair and healing of your body.

7. Turmeric - Use 1-2 drops in a veggie capsule 2x/day for an older child. Make a roller bottle with 5-8 drops for a younger child and apply 2-3x/day to the brainstem as it will help to create new learning pathways.
