What are the Big Six Emotions & How Can They Help Us

August 28, 2019ā€¢5 min read

One thing you learn traveling full-time is that you've got to be ready for anything.

Flat tire? Ready.

Window flies off the RV (seriously)? Ready.

šŸ¤• Boy needs stitches? Ready.

Back window of the truck shatters in a thousand pieces with the boys in the back seat? Ready.....

Sort of.

Huge emotional challenges? Ummm...

Today we'll talk about the Big Six Emotions and why they are for our benefit. šŸ˜¢šŸ˜”šŸ˜žšŸ˜±

As someone that cares for your family you've always got bandaids with you, but what if the damage is not to your skin, but to your heart? šŸ’” What do you do if your child is ANGRY? šŸ˜” What do you do if your husband is filled with SHAME? šŸ˜ž What do you do if your friend is experiencing DISGUST? šŸ¤¢

Are you ready to gain some insight into the Big Six emotions?

Yes? Let's dive in!

I've been on a spiritual journey since I was ten years old. Last year I discovered some of the most powerful tools that I've ever come across in my life - for connecting with God on a deeply spiritual level - and as I learn about them, I'm sharing them with you!

It's possible to have a head full of facts & not know the TRUTH.

We have focused on other live videos about TRUE CHANGE - change that comes from the inside out. Unless we experience freedom in our spiritual life addressing the other areas will just act as a bandaid. Jesus is the only one who brings true, lasting change so start with Him.

We've focused on

  1. breathing life into our spirit - where the foundation of our wellness lies

  2. how to experience true, lasting change

  3. a new way to experience Immanuel "God With Us" through interactive journaling

  4. delving into attachment styles so that we can experience a true connection with others

  5. and NOW... we will name the BIG SIX EMOTIONS and begin to understand what they can do for us.

Did you know that JOY is directly related to the quality of your relationships and your intimacy?

The right hemisphere of our brains are wired to experience each of these big SIX emotions. Let's take a look at them and see when we might experience each one of them.

  1. Sadness - "I lost some of my life."

  2. Anger - "I need to protect myself and make something stop."

  3. Fear - "I want to get away."

  4. Disgust - "This is not life-giving."

  5. Shame - "I'm not bringing you joy. You are not glad to be with me."

  6. Hopeless Despair - "I lack the resources I need for this."

Looking at these you might say to yourself, "Self, I can see how anger could be good for me, but calling some of these other ones good is a stretch." I get it. So not let's take a look at how these six emotions can be for our benefit.

Here's the good news! God can use these for His purposes and for our good!

  1. Sadness -  WHY? So we can develop compassion  - Example "Yeshua wept." John 11:35.

  2. Anger - dangerous, but it has the power to move you into ACTION or to intervene in a situation so that you can protect the thing you love.

  3. Fear - can save your life or another's, and helps keep us from doing dangerous and harmful things.

  4. Disgust - more than a reaction to something we don't want to eat, this emotion moves us to disciple those who are immature (Example: teaching my boys to wash their hands after they use the restroom!)

  5. Shame - healthy shame messages to other followers of Yeshua (Jesus) that this is not how we act (This pronouncement is, however, bathed in love and compassion)

  6. Hopeless Despair - brings us to dependence on God. When you are at the end of your rope you will be forced to rely on God. "Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning" Psalms 30:6

Have you experienced one (or several) of these big six emotions this week? Today, maybe? While they can be overwhelming, we are called to regulate them by the power of the Holy Spirit. (That's God's Spirit that lives within every person who has given their lives to Yeshua (Jesus).) While this is absolutely true there may be experiences that we have gone through that are hijacking our central nervous system and keeping us from being able to regulate our emotions effectively. šŸšŒ It's like being on a bus with bad brakes. Eventually the bus will come to a stop, but there may be some damage along with way. If you are a helpless passenger on that bus then reach out to me and let's talk about some of the new tools we have that can help "nudge" your nervous system back into alignment. With the right help you will once again know that joy of pressing the brake pedal and feeling the things around you slow down.

I invite you this week that as you experience one of the big six emotions.... stop and call it out by name. "I'm feeling _______ right now". See if this helps you move back to peace and joy more quickly and let me know.

We'll talk next week about what to do if you find yourself STUCK in one of these emotions and how you can return to JOY. :)
