Am I right?
Me too! And that's why I'm going to give you three ways to guard your heart more effectively during this time so that you can move through your day feeling lighter and less burdened by the heaviness of it all. 💓
You know that you can't bury your head in the sand because you want to stay well informed of current events, but you also don’t want your thoughts to just run away from you and set you in to freak out mode. 🤯
Are you ready to get a handle on your emotions over the next days and weeks? At the end of today’s video I will have given you many tools to put in your belt, and I’m going to ask you for a commitment. Is that ok?
In the Bible there is a famous verse that says to,
Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
(Proverbs 4:23)
Today we’re going to cover the Three P’s and how they can help you move through this challenging time with grace. Let’s dive right in.
1 - Prepare your heart
Every day challenges will come your way. We’ve all been there before. You wake up with a little headache, the kids are fighting, the dog threw up on the carpet, you realized you ran out of coffee, and now you’ve got to fix breakfast.
"Calgon, take me away! " Sorry - you may not be old enough to understand that reference.
As much as you’d like to retreat into a warm, bubbly bath, if you don’t get things under control pretty quickly it’s going to start looking like Lord of the Flies 2 in here. So what do you do to help you point your mind and your heart in the right direction? You’ve got to start your day by pointing your heart and mind in the right direction.
Each morning I like to start my day by spending time setting up my heart. There are a few practical things I do that are more important than taking a shower or combing my hair. Without them nobody is going to want to be around me any way.
The first things is that I spend time reading my Bible and praying. And of course, there’s an app for that.
The YouVersion Bible has been a long time favorite and they are constantly making improvements. Recently they’ve added a Prayer section that lets you keep track of your prayers. And they’ve also added a "Story" section that is a short, guided devotional over a specific verse each day.
To help you organize your prayer life, PrayerMate is a distraction-free app that brings up topics that you’ve entered in order to help you pray. Simply swipe between the different cards in order to move from one topic to another.
Soulspace meditation app has been created to help anchor your thoughts to the love of God and the way of Jesus. Most meditation is focused on emptying the mind, which can be helpful in moments of crisis and anxiety, but the goal at Soulspace is to rid the soul of fear and stress while filling it with truth and life. This creates the opportunity for true and lasting wholeness. You can use our code: 3LIFE to get 30 days of the paid version for free.
2 - Protect your heart
After you’ve set your heart in the right direction, it’s time to find some practical boundaries that will help protect it from the fiery darts that are going to come at you every day. So it’s time for a little honest self-evaluation.
To begin, what are the triggers in your life that set you in the wrong direction? Is it posts you read on social media? Is there a "friend" that sucks the life out of you? Do you get in a fight with your spouse every month around… that certain time you pay your bills? After you see the trigger you can begin to find ways to protect your heart.
So now I want you to write down three things you can do to help protect your heart during the times it might normally get tripped up. Maybe you need to find an app that helps you limit your time on social media. Maybe you need to find ways to limit your interaction with your friend, the black hole. Or maybe you need to see that you’ll pay bills in a few days and maybe you can skip it this month. Just kidding. Maybe you can look at the calendar and see that you’ll pay bills tomorrow, so today would be a great time to listen to an extra SoulSprace. Or twelve.
If you find yourself stuck in "trigger mode", this may be the time to seek a guide to walk you through returning to joy! Our nervous system retraining program, Safe and Sound, is an evidence-based therapeutic tool designed to reset the nervous system and return it to safety.
Here is what our previous client, Nichole, had to say...
Amy was such a joy to work with. She has compassion and understanding and uses that to help guide your nervous system to where it should be. This program successfully helped calm my nervous system globally and helped me connect the dots.
I want to speak a note to those of you who are high in Empathy - you know who you are. You are great at feeling what others feel - it's actually a gift - however, you can feel what others feel so much that it actually affects your own mental well-being; and sometimes your own physical well-being. To those of you with high Empathy - 1st - recognize that it is a gift and 2nd - recognize that in certain circumstance, you need to protect your heart even more. So, before going in to that family situation or being around that one person - use your oils before you do - to serve as a protective boundary around your heart. Some great options are Tea Tree, On Guard or Frankincense.
How are we doing so far? Are you ready for the next "P"?
3 - Purpose in your heart
We like to say that it’s not enough to get rid of an old bad habit, you have to replace it with something new. That’s what this section is about.
After you’ve prepared your heart, and then protected your heart, it’s time to dig into your purpose. In other words, what is your ultimate reason for being here, for doing what you do.
A few years ago Simon Sinek wrote a book called, "Start with Why." In that book he showed the difference between companies that tell you WHAT their product is good for, and those that show you WHY you want to use their product. Understanding WHY is also important for us, as humans. If you have a strong purpose in your life it will push you through the challenges you face. Think about it, What if I told you that I would give you $50. To earn it, all you had to do was carry something heavy around for nine months, the first three of those months you would throw up every time you smelled your husband’s socks, or looked at food in the morning. Then to graduate from the nine months you’d have to spend a couple hours enduring excruciating pain.
Would you do that for $50? Heck no. But would you do that to bring a new life into this world? Women have been doing it for centuries.
So what is the WHY that gets you out of bed each day? What’s the thing that helps you endure struggles?
I can’t figure that out for you, but I can tell you that it’s a big deal. And you should take some time to answer that question for yourself.
